Representative Anderson’s statement regarding Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s “public hanging” remarks.
JACKSON, MS – Representative Jeramey Anderson released this statement regarding the video that surfaced of U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith promoting “public hanging”:
“It is clear that Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is unfit to serve as a Mississippi public servant. I refuse to normalize public servants who promote division and violence. The Senator’s hateful, offensive and violent rhetoric proves her ignorance and regressive thinking. Her irresponsible and tone deaf remarks jeopardizes the integrity of the entire state and undermines the very progress we have made in our state. Over 600 documented lynchings of African Americans puts us on top of the list for the most lynchings in the country. Senator Hyde-Smith, somehow finds it fitting and okay to support lynchings. The fact that so many are calling Senator Hyde-Smith out for her racist remarks shows us just how far we’ve come. However, the fact that a sitting U.S. Senator would have the audacity to make such a comment shows us just how much further we have to go. Mississippians deserve better because we are better.”
